WELCOME to MyTeacherDave.com
¡HOLA!,
You’re very welcome to the mini version of Spanish Past Simple from my Full Spanish Hub.
It is super-important as it is one of the “core” tenses for you to know, communicate well and succeed at Leaving Cert. level.
All past L.C. students will testify that this tense comes up in the Listening, Reading, Writing and ORAL sections of the Leaving Cert. exam!
Check out the BLUE BOX below for some examples of this tense in English.

Some of the activities and resources you get in this page are…
Regular Verbs in the Past
Comprehension Video
Explanation Video
In Sección 5, you’re going to do a listening comprehension. But let’s get started now by categorising regular verbs into their categories (-ar, -er & -ir) of the
SPANISH PAST SIMPLE
In the activity, you get:
– all of the REGULAR VERBS from the story
– a chart with the 3 categories of Spanish verbs.
Move the verbs (in grey) to the correct category in the table by dragging them with your finger or mouse.
Now, you’re going to test yourself a little further by completing the activity below with the correct form of the Past Simple.
Do the activity once, record your score and do it again after watching the explanation video.
After the video, try for 100% correct in the activity above.
You can now watch a short and snappy video of how to conjugate the regular verbs in the Spanish Past Simple (El pretérito indefinido).
This is especially useful if you are not 100% sure about this topic of Spanish grammar.
Take notes while watch, download the video free of charge (click the 3 dots when the video is playing).
¡Vas muy bien! – “You’re going great!”
This group of verbs has three sub-groups according to the slight changes to the root of the verb. However, they still behave very much like normal regular verbs in terms of there endings.
You are going to test yourself on only one category here (-ar in the blue door) but you will learn all the differences between them in a nice presentation below in the “FREE NOTES” section that you can keep.
As you can see from the image, there are three categories of “changers”.
In your school, your teachers may call these “radical-changing verbs“.
In this Free Spanish Past Simple page, you can try one of the three categories (the blue door!).
Complete each of the sentences below with the correct form of the verb in brackets. CLICK “CHECK” for the answers.
The theme of this whole page is…
The Hellfire Club (Dublin) is one of the most famous and scariest places to visit…especially at night!
It has a long and fascinating history that is full of supernatural events and very dark tales and legends.
The next two sections build you up to doing a Leaving Cert. level listening comprehension.
We’ll start with some core vocabulary from the story…
1) In the activity, you get:
– 6 images
– 6 pieces of vocabulary
2) Move each word to the correct image.
Now, let’s take it a step further by using this vocabulary in some sentences.
Complete each of the sentences below with the correct word from the activity above.
Below, is the video of the story “El Diablo y el Hellfire Club“.
You are going to watch the video and do a Listening Comprehension.
Watch the video and complete the comprehension activity below it.
* TIP! Always read and understand the questions before any listening activity. *
To help with your studies, I have made one complete set of notes covering everything we’ve learned in this page.
Simply click the images and download your copies.
I suggest you print these and store them in your MyTeacherDave folder for future revision.
Hasta pronto,
Profesor Dave.

The only thing you need is a good internet connection, and a laptop or tablet.
I am a Doctor (PhD) of Linguistics with Spanish and English now, but I actually started Spanish as a hobby 18 years ago with zero idea of the language! I made all the mistakes, worked really hard, became an expert (a Doctor!) and developed the best ways to learn properly and retain what I learned.
As a teacher, I dedicate everything I do to show you how to improve, love the language and know what it’s like to be successful with it.
As one of my past students said:
“Dave gives so much time to your improvement and is really invested in your progress”. – Hannah Sharky.
